Biography

Douglas Kelley is Professor of Communication Studies and a Lincoln Professor of Applied Ethics at Arizona State University. Much of his research has focused on Marital Communication, resulting in a book by the same name. His 1998 study, The Communication of Forgiveness, is the seminal piece of research on the communication of forgiveness, and launched two decades of work focusing on various forgiveness processes, culminating with the two-time award-winning book Communicating Forgiveness. His most recent book, Just Relationships: Living Out Social Justice as Mentor, Family, Friend, and Lover explores ideas as to how we may live justly with one another in our personal relationships, treating each other with respect and love, and advocating for the re-humanization of our personal encounters. Professor Kelley’s research has appeared in numerous professional journals, and he is recipient of the Centennial Professor Award at ASU. Doug teaches relationship-based courses and conducts workshops in the community on forgiveness and reconciliation, marital and family communication, conflict processes, relational communication (including intimacy and love), and inner-city families. Of particular note, he has long-standing relationships with various faith-communities and his service- learning course, Inner City Families, has placed students in a variety of community organizations for over a decade.
