Can technology have a humane future?

March 14th, 2019

The Future of Humane Technology Symposium, Washington D.C.

The goal for this meeting is agenda-setting for future innovation in humane technologies. We will tackle this goal by discussing ongoing developments in AI, personalized medicine and climate change.

We believe the tech industry has reached a critical juncture in its social and moral development. Since the rise of personal computing, many have taken for granted that technical advance is the same as innovation, and that innovation inevitably improves our lives.

Increasingly, however, a growing crowd from across the cultural and political spectrum has started to doubt this inevitability. For many, the costs are too high. It is no longer enough to adapt humanly as technologies transform our world. The challenge is to reimagine technology for a humane world.

We are convinced humanities-inspired research will be vital to realizing the potential of this shift.

To that end, we are bringing together scholars, scientists, journalists and policymakers whose work is sparking a more capacious and humanly rich vision for the future of innovation.
