Lincoln Center Cultivating Civic Virtue Fellowship
The Cultivating Civic Virtues through Action (CCVA) Initiative, housed in the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics, is a university-wide effort dedicated to strengthening the civic character and virtues necessary for a thriving, pluralistic democracy. At its core, CCVA focuses on five interrelated civic virtues: civility, empathy, epistemic humility, openness to ideas and civic grace.
Civic virtues are not merely abstract ideals. They are enduring character traits developed through practice, reflection and intentional action.
In an era marked by deep differences and complex challenges, these virtues equip students, faculty and community members to engage across disagreement, navigate uncertainty and contribute to the common good.
The Student Fellowship supports students to cultivate these virtues through convening a community of students who share the goal of bringing about a future where people with different beliefs can work together and deliberate about issues on which they disagree.
Fellows will receive a $1,500 scholarship for their participation, posted to their account across the fall and spring semesters.
What will fellows do?
Lincoln Center Civic Virtue Fellows (collectively called virtuous devils) will participate in a year-long program where we will practice the art of talking across differences — listening to and engaging with people who have different beliefs — and organize a series of public “Discussion Across Difference” events in the spring.
Fellows will meet weekly, starting October 23, through the end of the spring semester. Fellows must be able to commit to weekly meetings on Fridays at 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. for fall (B session) and spring semesters.
Who should apply?
- We welcome applications from any student who is passionate about shaping the world to be a better place. Students who are passionate about a particular issue will be able to propose hosting events about that issue.
- We are looking for an ideologically diverse group of fellows, and encourage students from all majors to apply.
- Applicants have to be currently enrolled undergraduate students at Arizona State University and have an anticipated graduation date no earlier than Spring 2027.
- Students who are interested in graduate or professional school might especially benefit from the fellowship.
