Research integrity across disciplines

The Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics at Arizona State University is partnering with the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) to develop a research integrity framework that can be used across academic disciplines.

The project brings together scholars, researchers and academic leaders to identify shared principles that support ethical, trustworthy and responsible research in every field of study.

Why is research integrity important?

As research becomes more collaborative and artificial intelligence tools become more common, universities face new questions about authorship, evidence, accountability and transparency.

This project will help build a shared foundation for research integrity, strengthen public trust in research and provide guidance for emerging ethical challenges.

Project goals

The project aims to create a publicly accessible statement of research integrity principles that:

  • Identifies ethical commitments shared across disciplines.
  • Addresses research practices such as authorship, evidence, peer review and public engagement.
  • Examines the implications of AI and large language models in research.
  • Supports universities and professional organizations in fostering responsible research cultures.

By bringing together perspectives from the humanities, social sciences and sciences, the project will help advance a more consistent approach to research integrity across higher education.
